Critical Praise “Betty Smith has written a solid and sincere book in more as in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn she gives us a fine assemblage of characters and incidents out of the rich creative remembrance and imaginings of her own life.” - Paul Green, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of In Abraham’s Bosom “Written with such unobtrusive skill that it seems to flow along . Betty's third book, Maggie-Now, is published in Betty's last novel, Joy in the Morning, is published in Betty Smith dies Janu , in Shelton, Connecticut, of pneumonia.

Smith's book A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is basically flawless, but this one didn't do it for me at all. It's completely different, to be sure: I think that Smith deliberately makes all the characters in MAGGIE-NOW unsympathetic, which is more like reality than we'd like to admit/5(3).
